ESL (English as a Second Language) programs are designed to help non-native English speakers develop their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. ESL is essential for individuals who travel to English-speaking countries, as it enables them to communicate effectively in various aspects of life, such as work, education, and daily interactions. These programs cater to learners of all ages and proficiency levels, offering specialized curricula to meet diverse needs. Instruction can take various forms, including one-on-one tutoring, group classes and immersion programs. Teachers use various methodologies and resources to engage learners and foster language acquisition.

If you're new to the language, an   ESL class can start with learning the fundamentals of the English language; covering   the alphabet, pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and grammar. You’ll begin practicing how to read and write in English, and engage in basic conversations with instructors and classmates. As you progress in your studies, courses cover more advanced English grammar, teaching you how to use different verb tenses, while also introducing higher-level vocabulary. You may cover a cultural component in the coursework as well, exploring different regions that speak English and examining different English dialects.

Some ESL courses may prepare learners for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) language tests. These tests can be required by universities and colleges for admission, and they can also be used to qualify for visas and scholarships. The TOEFL and IELTS tests assess different aspects of English proficiency, so it's important to choose a course that focuses on the areas that you need to improve.

All high school international students who intend to enter university and who do not have officially recognized English test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS are required to take the ESL test and obtain a qualified ESL score, otherwise they will not be able to enter the university to study professional courses. ESL test is graded according to different scores, and the standard of the ESL test is as follows: 91-100 is advanced level 5, 81-90 is level 4, 70-80 is level 3, 60-69 is level 2, and 60 or less is level 1. Scores of 70~80 are level 3, 60~69 are level 2, and scores below 60 are level 1.

◆91~100 points is level 5 Advanced: The ability to express oneself in English and to write with precision, fluency, and full understanding of the English language, to the extent that it is comparable to that of a native speaker in an English-speaking country.

◆81~90: Level 4 Upper Intermediate: Ability to conduct business meetings and presentations, with occasional inability to connect and inappropriate errors.

◆70~80: Level 3 Intermediate: Can generally understand and master some complex English, but in some situations there may be inaccuracies, inappropriateness, and misunderstandings and deficiencies.

◆60~69 points as Level 2 Beginner : Can communicate using basic vocabulary only in very familiar areas.

◆Below 60 is Level 1 Elementary: Can only use single words or short phrases to convey basic messages in the most familiar situations, and therefore has great difficulty in speaking and writing English.

＊Most universities require ESL scores of Level 3 or higher; graduate schools require Level 4 or higher.

The ESL test is divided into four parts: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test time is 30 minutes for listening, 90 minutes for reading, 60 minutes for writing, and 6 to 15 minutes for speaking.
