About the SAT
The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice, computer-based test created and administered by the College Board. Here's the key information about the SAT:
What is on the SAT?
The SAT has four sections: Reading, Writing and Language, Math (no calculator), and Math (with calculator). There is also an optional essay that is recommended or required by some colleges.
The SAT's computerized test uses an adaptive testing model, which dynamically adjusts the difficulty of the test questions based on the test taker's ability level. This is similar to the GRE or GMAT, where a test taker's performance on the first section determines the difficulty level of the second section. The test is divided into three sections: Reading, Writing, and Math, each of which contains two modules (Module 1 and Module 2). In Module 1, all test takers are presented with questions of increasing difficulty, ranging from easy, medium, and hard, and are free to modify their answers within the module. The difficulty of the questions in Module 2 is adjusted according to the candidate's performance in Module 1. This adaptive testing ensures that each candidate is faced with questions that are individualized and different from others, but that the difficulty of the content and the grading criteria remain consistent. This design is intended to minimize the possibility of cheating and to ensure the fairness and accuracy of the test. When should I take the SAT?
Most high school students take the SAT, the ACT, or both during the spring of their junior year or fall of their senior year. It's important to leave time to re-take the test if you need to raise your score before you apply to college. The SAT exam is offered nationally every year in August, October, November, December, March, May, and June. How long is the SAT?
The SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long. How is the SAT scored?
Each section of the SAT is scored on a 200 to 800 point scale. Your total SAT score is the sum of your section scores. The highest possible SAT score is 1600. Should I take the SAT or the ACT?
Most colleges and universities will accept scores from either the SAT or ACT, and do not favor one test over the other. That said, college-bound students are increasingly taking both the SAT and ACT. Changes made to the SAT in 2016 have made it easier than ever to prep for both tests concurrently—and earn competitive scores on both! The best way to decide if taking the SAT, ACT, or both tests is right for you is to take a timed full-length practice test of each type. Since the content and style of the SAT and ACT are very similar, factors like how you handle time pressure and what types of questions you find most challenging can help you determine which test is a better fit. Or you can refer to the following simple standard: ◆Targeting the Top 10 Colleges: Taking the SAT is a must for students who aspire to be among the top 10 colleges! ◆Targeting the top 20 to 30 colleges: For students hoping to get into the top 20 to 30 colleges, here are two key pieces of advice: if your TOEFL scores are already at the desired level, the next step should be to focus on boosting your scores on the standardized tests and make a decision on whether or not to submit them based on the final scores, or, if you haven't yet reached the desired level of your TOEFL scores, make it a priority to prepare for the TOEFL test. ◆Targeting the top 30 to 60 colleges: For students in this group, it is recommended to first focus on improving your language scores while not ignoring the importance of standardized tests. Although many colleges have made SAT/ACT scores a non-mandatory option, these scores can still significantly improve your overall competitiveness. ◆SAT Score Requirements for Top 50 Colleges: Typically, top 50 colleges admit students with SAT scores between 1400 and 1580. However, when deciding which schools to apply to target, in addition to considering SAT scores, you should also take into account factors such as personal interests and specialty features. How do I register for the SAT?
SAT registration deadlines fall approximately five weeks before each test date. Register online on the College Board website. Changes to the SAT in 2024
◆Optimization of Test Time: The SAT's computerized test has shortened the length of the test from the original 3 hours to 2 hours, a change that means test takers will have more time to answer each question. ◆Introduction of Adaptive Testing: The SAT consists of two sections: Reading and Grammar, and Math. Test takers will be required to complete the questions in one section before moving on to the next. The difficulty of the second section will be adjusted based on the test taker's performance on the first section. This personalized test is designed to more accurately measure students' level of knowledge, as well as to reduce the pressure on test takers when answering questions and ensure the fairness of the test. ◆Faster marking: Candidates will be able to check their results within a few days of the end of the exam, and this rapid results feedback mechanism provides timely feedback to candidates. ◆Convenience of calculator use: Throughout the math section, the test system will provide graphing calculators for candidates to use, or candidates can choose to bring their own calculators, which provides an additional tool for solving math problems. |
